Inspired by Swatch Bharat Mission: Poonch’s Border Village Demand Local Body for Sanitation

Jammu: Inspired by success of Swatch  Bharat Mission, a flagship program of Govt of India, now even the inhabitants of  border town demanding establishing a local bodies there for sanitation facilities.
Highlighting the Poor Sanitation condition and lack of basic public utilities in Mendhar town, a group of youth led by Dr Shazad Malik, Vice Chancellor of Sai Nath University and a native of the area has put forth the public demand for establishing a full fledged Municipality  there  in  sub-divisional headquarter Mendhar which consists of three Tehsils  Balakote, Mankote and Mendhar itself.
In their appeal to the Chief minister and  Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh, they have asked for constitution of a local self government body for Mendhar town to cater the basic needs like proper sanitation, Planned  development of the town,  appointment of Safai Karamcharis, management of the Bus Stand, Proper Licensing of Rehris and food vendors, construction of lanes, drains, Urinals and public toilets and wash rooms.
The VC led group argued that thousands of people visit the town everyday including students, senior citizens and women and in the absence of public utilities they face lot of inconvenience.
In the appeal, it is asked that when GOI providing millions of Rupees to State governments Municipalities under Swatch Bharat Mission, it is unfortunate that till date their area did not get even a notified area forget  municipality and  for decades people are deprived of even basic amenities.
Seeking parity with other towns with regard to sanitation  facilities, the VC  said they  also deserve Swatch Mendhar.
At present,  PWD and Rural Development Department  looking after sanitation facilities wherein   they have failed despite getting huge funds by way of Charging Adda fees at Bus Stand and various other points.
